Word 2007: Switch from SDI to MDI

SDI: Single Document Interface. Every document you open is displayed in its own instance of Word.

MDI: Multi-document interface: Only one Word instance is shown, no matter how many Word documents you have open.

Word used to be SDI only, and then Word 2003 became MDI. You can switch between MDI and SDI using the Word Options dialog:

Use the following option to switch between MDI and SDI:

  • Word Options >  Advanced > Display > Show all windows in the taskbar
